Mt Kilimanjaro 7 Days Lemosho Route

from 1,799 $

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is a volcanic mountain that has three volcanic cones that is Shira, Mawenzi and Kimbo. It is spectacular because it is snowcapped and is not found on highlands but mushrooms from low land, rising from approximately 4,900m (16,000ft) from its base to 5,895m (19,341ft) above sea level. The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park. It is a major climbing destination by most mountaineers.  A lot of scientific studies have been conducted on the mountain because of its shrinking glaciers. The first ascent to the summit in record was by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889.

There are different routes that one can use to access the summit. We are going to give you each route with a detailed daily breakdown of time.

All about the Mt Kilimanjaro 7 Days Lemosho Route.

This route scales Mount Kilimanjaro from the western side. The first 2 days transverse the thick rain forest belt which later changes into heath and moorland with many ferns and ericas along the way. Sometimes the trail encounters very steep passages and goes through diverse landscapes. By day 3, the route joins Machame route. Compared to Rongai and Machame route, Lemosho route is more challenging.

  2. Day2 Moshi Town To Londorossi Gate

After breakfast in your hotel, you will take a 2hrs drive to Londorossi Gate. You will register with the park authorities and familiarize with the crew. Afterwards you will take a 15km drive on a bumpy road to the starting point at the edge of the rainforest. You will be served with lunch before you start your trek. You will take a short walk of about 3hrs to Mti Mkubwa Camp. The day’s trek is short and thus you will enjoy the lush green vegetation and might even catch a glimpse of Columbus monkeys sitting in the branches above you.

  3. Day3 Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1

After breakfast at Mti Mkubwa Camp you will walk along a thin trail through the rainforest. Vegetation will gradually become scarce until you finally reach the moorland filled with Lobelia and Eric plants. You will transverse through rolling hills and reach Shira 1 Camp looking over the Shira Plateau. From here you will be able to see the unmistakable snow-capped summit of Kibo. You will take your dinner and retire for the night.

  4. Day4 Shira 1 Camp to Shira Camp 2

After breakfast you will start your walk to Shira 2 Camp, a walk on the rocky ground of Shira Ridge. The area has low grass and shrubs and the terrain is much flatter than the day before. From here, you will be fascinated by scenic view of Mount Meru and the Great Rift Valley. You will keep walking on lava grounds till you arrive to Shira 2 Camp where you will have your evening meal. The day was relatively easy but you can enjoy your night at this camp.

  5. Day5 Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

This is a day for acclimatization. You will notice that you will climb high and come back to sleep low. This is the best method to acclimatize because your body will get used to different altitudes and you will be able notice how your body reacts to changes in altitude. After breakfast, you will ascend to Lave Tower through a boulder strewn terrain seeing Kibo peak at a distance. Upon reaching Lava Tower, you will rest and allow your body to get used to the higher altitude. You will later start descent to Barranco Camp. Along the way the scenery changes once more and you are soon surrounded by giant Senecias and smaller Lobelia plants. After 6 – 7 hours you will reach the beautiful and green Barranco Camp, which offers great views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. You will have your meals and retire to gather energy for the next day.

  6. Day6 Barranco Camp Barafu Camp

The famous Barranco wall, which is probably the steepest part of the entire route, awaits you after breakfast. Although no technical climbing is necessary, some spots do require you to use your hands for a better grip and to pull yourself up. Your guide will be close by to help you if necessary. After you have pulled yourself around the Kissing Rock you will make your way along the mountain ridge and through the Karanga Valley. You will also pass the last water spot as you finally reach Karanga Camp. We will rest briefly as you take your lunch and then proceed to Barafu Camp. The landscape is very dry and the ground cracks like glass under your boots. As you make your way through the afro-alpine dessert to the rocky Barafu Camp, a sense of excitement sweeps over you as your final stretch is but a few hours away. The Barafu Camp with its rocky scenery allows for a stunning view of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path ahead. You will take your dinner and we advise you rest early as the final trek to summit awaits you at midnight.

  7. Day7 Barafu Camp to Mweka Camp

At around midnight you will be awoken with some hot tea and biscuits in order to get you ready for today’s ascents. You will ascend in a north-westerly direction through heavy scree toward Stella Point, arriving there in about 5 – 7 hours. At Stella Point you may rest if necessary before taking on another 1-2 hour stretch along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak – the highlight of your trip. A breath-taking view awaits you as you stand on the highest mountain in Africa. After taking as much pictures as your camera will allow, you will leave behind the glistening glaciers and snowy peak and make your way back down to Barafu Camp. Here you will have time to catch your breath before heading further down to Mweka Gate (3,080m), approximately 3 hours walk. A scrumptious dinner and a peaceful night’s sleep awaits you.

  8. Day8 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gage

After a hearty breakfast and a traditional farewell ceremony by your mountain crew, you will start your final descent to Mweka Gate. A leisurely 2 – 3 hours walk will take you once more through the lush rainforest, where the endemic Impatiens Kilimanjaro flower grows. Reaching Mweka Gate where your transferring driver will be waiting for you. He will take you back to your hotel in Moshi and after a warm shower, the rest of the day is free to rest and relax as you contemplate on your achievement.
