Mt Kilimanjaro 6 Days Marangu Route

from 1,500 $

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is a volcanic mountain that has three volcanic cones that is Shira, Mawenzi and Kimbo. It is spectacular because it is snowcapped and is not found on highlands but mushrooms from low land, rising from approximately 4,900m (16,000ft) from its base to 5,895m (19,341ft) above sea level. The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park. It is a major climbing destination by most mountaineers.  A lot of scientific studies have been conducted on the mountain because of its shrinking glaciers. The first ascent to the summit in record was by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889.

There are different routes that one can use to access the summit. We are going to give you each route with a detailed daily breakdown of time.

  1. Day1 Transfer from Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi Town

Upon arrival, you will be picked by a driver and he shall drive you to your hotel. Orientation for the 6 days hike shall be done at the hotel. Your guides will meet you and have a spot check on your gear and make adjustments where necessary.

  2. Day2 From Moshi Town to Marangu Gate

In the morning we shall leave the hotel and proceed for an hour’s drive to Marangu Gate. You will get a chance to acquaint yourself with chefs, guides and porters. After registration at the gate, we shall embark on our 6 days hike to the summit. From the gate, the trek begins in the rain forest of Kilimanjaro. The trail here is referred to as the mountain’s timbered skirting and the emerald folds which are hemmed by silver streams and shimmer with flora sequins. Half way the trek we will stop at Kisambioni picnic site for lunch. After lunch we shall continue to Mandara Hut. Here you can opt to rest or take a stroll to Maundi crater where you shall have a glimpse of Taveta in the east. On a clear day you will be able to view jagged edges of the Mawenzi peak to north western region. Dinner will be served at the dining area.

  3. Day3 From Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, we will begin to trek up to Horombo Hut. In contrast with the rain forest trek, we will be scaling the Kilimanjaro moorland. You shall view cold desert like plants scattered across the rocky landscape and from a distance the Uhuru Peak and Mawenzi Peak are gradually revealed. At Kambi ya Taanu we will take a picnic lunch break as you marvel at the scenic views of Mawenzi and Uhuru Peaks. After lunch we will embark on the trek and arrive at Horombo Hut still in the afternoon. The Horombo Huts are the most luxurious huts on the route and accommodate both ascending and descending hikers.

  4. Day4 Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Hut

One of the advantages of using this route is the extra day of acclimatization to enable you to scale well to the summit. We advise that you aim to hike all the way to Mawenzi Hut to enable maximum acclimatization. You will take lunch at Mawenzi Hut and lounge at the huts for the rest of the day. You will be rewarded by a spectacular view of Kibo from this angle.

  5. Day5 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

You will be served with an energy dense breakfast at the dining area in the morning. After the breakfast we will embark on the final part of our six days ascent to the summit. We will hike through alpine desert of Kilimanjaro. An hour later we will arrive at the Maua River and encounter our first milestone, a small mountain stream. From here you will notice that the terrain gradually flattens and the vegetation starts vanishing. Once you come across the Middle Red Hill, we will take a lunch break. The incline of Kilimanjaro’s saddle is steady and we will hike along the trail for about two hours. Although we are on a desolate desert and vegetation is scarcely placed across the land, the splendid views of Kibo and Mawenzi will compensate the scenic pleasure. We will reach the Kibo Huts in the afternoon. We recommend you rest early to prepare for the midnight climb.

  6. Day6 Kibo Hut to Summit

We will begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s rooftop at midnight. Though the adrenaline is low, we will start with a grueling five hours trek to Gillman’s point located at the perimeter of the crater. This trail though considered the easiest ascent path is tremendously difficult because of the high altitude. It takes approximately two hours to come across the first major rest stop, William’s point. After another 30 minutes before encountering the rocky terrain that leads the way to Gillman’s point (5,681m). The actual hike to Gilman’s point does not have a great level of difficulty but when combined with high altitude and fatigue, it becomes tiring and slow.
You will hike for further two hours before reaching your goal, Uhuru peak. You can take photos and savor the magnificent land scape and sun rise before we embark on our descent trip.
You will realize that the route down the summit has remarkable views that were out of sight whilst ascending. We will stop at Kibo Hut to give you a chance to catch a breath. In the afternoon we will arrive at Horombo Huts. You can relax and enjoy your last night at the mountain.

  7. Day7 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After enjoying your breakfast in the dining area, you will start your last trek to Marangu gate. The descent trek will provide you with the most beautiful sights of Kilimanjaro cloud forest. You will marvel at the rays of light and mysterious puffs of white that gleam through the underpass of branches. Caution should be taken because the path tends to be slippery. Vehicles will be waiting at Marangu gate where you will have a chance to buy souvenirs to keep your memories of the 6 days trip to the roof of Africa.
