Mt Kilimanjaro 7 Days Machame Route
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. It is a volcanic mountain that has three volcanic cones that is Shira, Mawenzi and Kimbo. It is spectacular because it is snowcapped and is not found on highlands but mushrooms from low land, rising from approximately 4,900m (16,000ft) from its base to 5,895m (19,341ft) above sea level. The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park. It is a major climbing destination by most mountaineers. A lot of scientific studies have been conducted on the mountain because of its shrinking glaciers. The first ascent to the summit in record was by Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889.
There are different routes that one can use to access the summit. We are going to give you each route with a detailed daily breakdown of time.

For adventurous hikers this is the most adventurous route- incomparable with other routes. The route will offer you climatic varieties. It’s like travelling from the Tropics to the Arctics’. Hikers sleep in tents which are carried up the mountain by the porters. We will begin by hiking up the steep paths amidst the glorious rainforests until we reach the ridge leading through to the moorland zones, a barren land shadowed by ominous desert plants. The barranco (steep climb) wall before Shira ridge may prove a challenge because of the physical demand and to those with problems of height. Most of the other routes will join the Machame route in day three thus a high number of hikers. The 7 days Machame Route is considered to be a challenging trek but it has excellent conditions for a smooth acclimatization.

Transfer from Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi Town

From Moshi Town To Machame Park Gate
After breakfast in the hotel, you will embark on a one hour drive to Machame Park Gate and register with park authority. After familiarizing with the crew, we will start the ascent in the rain forest. The sky vanishes almost completely, emerald ceilings permit only a few fragments of light like scattered pieces of glass. The air is rich with fragrance of leaves and loam and the rich soil feels soft beneath one’s feet. The melodies from the exotic birds permeate the air whilst the Black and White Columbus Monkeys and Sykes Monkeys swing from the branches. The trail proceeds onto some heath land until we reach the Machame Camp. It will take about 6 to 7 hours. The camp is above the rain forest and thus provides a scenic view. You will take your diner at the camp.
From Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast we will venture across the beautiful heath land and the dunes of the moorland. This is the best observation point of gleaming peak of Kilimanjaro. The steep trail through the tall savannah is serene and the immense trees of the Heather and Erica plains are breathtaking. We will have to scramble across enormous boulders encrusted with Lobelia and Senecio plants to enter the arid plains of the moorland. The volcanic rocks are covered with lichen creepers that guard the striking wild alpine flowers that grow at their bases. We will take our meals upon reaching Shira camp and spend the night here.
Get to Know Country
After breakfast, we will embark on our trail as we draw closer to the peak. We will approach the Lava Tower which is a three hundred feet tall volcanic plug that provides a passage at 15,000ft. The trek becomes demanding at this stage as the gradient becomes slightly steep. In the afternoon we will begin to descend down to Great Barranco valley. Barranco Camp lies on a flat area that is embraced by three steep valley walls and the stunning Kibo massif. Glacier dangle, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding due to sun rays. Plants like the exclusively Giant Lobelia and the enormous groundsels (Senecio Kilimanjaro) dominate the eerily tranquil landscape. We will descend gently to Barranco camp and take our meals at the camp. This day and the following day are acclimatization days.
From Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, our trail will lead us into the allusive Gorge before we climb its eastern wall. Beautiful views of the blankets of frost that cover Kilimanjaro’s ice fields are best observed at these angles. This is a rare occurrence in equatorial regions. The first part will be a ninety minute strenuous climb up the Barranco wall. Some areas will require you to support your body weight as you ascend. After this we will continue trekking on a calm trail until we reach the Karanga Valley (13,900ft). A camp will be set and so all you will have to do is to enjoy your meal as you relax and acclimatize
From Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, the trail will gradually begin to ascend as we trek through the astounding scenery of the Karanga valley. We will venture across the granitic floors of lava ridge as we approach the Barafu camp. The temperatures will begin to drop and vegetation begins to diminish. The barafu camp is situated on a minimal, exposed zone of smooth ridge. You will be served an energy dense meal and are advised to take maximum rest for your midnight ascent to the summit.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
At midnight, we will begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s roof top. Your head lamp will illuminate the trail for the next six hours. The ascension to the crater rim is the most strenuous task on the entire trek. The gradient is incredibly steep until you reach Stella point. From Stella point the hike becomes slow and tiring due to the high altitude and fatigue. This will take us about an hour to get to Uhuru Peak. Once we conquer the summit you can take photographs as you marvel at the landscape. We will start to make our way back to Mweka camp and you will notice sceneries that you did not notice on your way up. Upon arriving back at Barafu camp, you will be served with breakfast as you catch your breath. After breakfast, we will spend the next three to five hours descending to Mweka Camp where you will spend your last night on the mountain.
Mweka Camp to Park Gate
After enjoying your last breakfast on the mountains, we will begin our 3 to 4 hours descent to park gates. You can admire the scenic views and enjoy the tranquility on your final trek. After exchanging farewells with the crew, we will drive you back to Moshi to your hotel.
